The nine-tailed fox | Suzhou double-sided embroidery by 杨雪
good time to remember that embroidery is an incredibly intricate artform with a rich and detailed history. because most of its craftspeople were and remain women, it has rarely received the attention given to say, oil painting, despite the fact that throughout history, for the average person embroidery was more visible and present in daily life. the reason this skill was so valued in young women was that future mothers and daughters-in-law could use this artform to add color and beauty and joy to entire lives & households.
seeing it elevated like in the video above is so remarkable. never forget that embroidery is as valuable and stunning as any artform
Not only does this take great skill to create a beautiful image on the A side, but unlike most embroidery which leaves the B side a mess this takes even greater skill to plan and execute the various techniques and thread control to have a clean (mirrored) image on the B side!
